How to Choose a Ready-Made Birthday Present Hunt for Your Child

You want a printable birthday treasure hunt for finding their presents at home, but you're not sure which one to buy. Search for one and you'll find free clue sheets, editable templates, party games and ready-made hunts, often with very similar names. They are not all the same, and the right one depends on what you want from the birthday. This guide covers the options and how to choose. I make two home hunts at Gift Hunt Co.: The Birthday Gift Hunt for ages 6–8 and Spy Mission Birthday Gift Hunt for ages 8–10.

What are you actually buying?

A birthday gift hunt means one child follows clues to find their own presents. Plenty of other things share the "treasure hunt" or "scavenger hunt" label: lists of objects to tick off, team games for party guests, outdoor trails. They are fun, but they do a different job. I wrote more about this in What Is a Gift Hunt?.

The options

Format What you get Suits you if
Ready-made birthday present hunt (printable PDF) Clues already written. You print, cut and hide. You want it done without writing anything & an engaging story
Editable template A layout where you type your own clues You want personal clues and have time to write them
Free clue sheet A basic set of clues You only need something simple. A free sheet may be all you need.
Party game Activities for a group of party guests You are entertaining a crowd rather than revealing presents

What's right for you?

  • Who is it for? One child finding their presents, or a group of guests?
  • How much time do you have? Writing good clues takes longer than most people expect. Some take a long time to set up, especially if you need to pay attention to which order to hide things in.
  • Will it fit your home? Look for a pack where you choose which clues to use, so every hiding place suits your house.
  • What happens if they get stuck? Check whether answers and hints are included.

Why mine are ready-written

The feedback I hear most from parents is: "It's amazing you do that, but seriously, who has time?" They loved the idea of a hunt but didn't feel they had the time to write one. So I built mine for maximum fun for the child with minimal effort for the parent. Each hunt has a theme running through the clues and an introduction letter that sets the scene. The clues are already written, so your part is print, choose, hide. You hide and find them in any order, so there is no worrying about what leads where.

Choose a hunt for ages 6–8 or 8–10

The Birthday Gift Hunt Spy Mission Birthday Gift Hunt
Ages 6–8 8–10
Level Easier, simple puzzles & riddles More challenging puzzles, ciphers & codes
Feel A treasure hunt with clues, puzzles and a word search A secret mission with code-breaking, a word search and other puzzles
Cards 13 location clues and 2 blank cards 13 location clues, 1 optional lock clue and 2 blank cards
Also included Introduction letter, parent answers, hints and hiding guide Introduction letter, parent answers, hints and hiding guide
Optional extras Small envelopes Envelopes, and a 3-digit combination lock for a suitcase finale

The 6–8 hunt is the easier of the two, and the 8–10 is more challenging. Both include age eight. If your eight-year-old likes a straightforward treasure hunt, choose The Birthday Gift Hunt. If they're ready for a step up and enjoy codes, secret missions and puzzles, choose Spy Mission. Either way, the parent notes have the answers and hints if they get stuck.

How it works

  1. Print the PDF (UK A4 or US Letter) and cut out the cards.
  2. Choose the clues that suit your home. I suggest 8 to 12, and they don't need to follow on from each other.
  3. Hide a gift or small treat at each location you chose. Keep the spots safe and easy for your child to reach.
  4. Hand over the introduction letter and your selected clue cards.

The parent notes give every answer, hiding spots and hints. For the ages 6–8 hunt, allow around 5–10 minutes to prepare and 30–60 minutes of play. Spy Mission timing varies with the clues you choose and your child’s puzzle confidence.

What you get, and what you provide

You get an instant digital download: PDFs in UK A4 and US Letter, in English, with the clues ready-written and ready to print. Each home hunt includes two blank cards for a clue of your own. You provide the gifts or small treats, a printer, scissors and a pen or pencil, plus a mirror if you choose a mirror-reading clue.

Choose your birthday gift hunt: ages 6–8 or Spy Mission ages 8–10.

FAQs

Where can I buy a printable birthday present hunt for a 7-year-old?

The Birthday Gift Hunt is designed for ages 6–8. It's a printable PDF for use at home. You provide the presents or small treats. Find it here.

Can I print it for a birthday tomorrow?

Yes. They're instant digital downloads, so you can print straight away. Print, cut, choose your clues and hide the gifts. Prepare ahead and allow enough time to choose safe hiding places.

Are the clues editable or personalised?

The clues are ready-written, so there's nothing to edit before you print. They're the same for every buyer, and each home hunt includes two blank cards for optional clues of your own.

Do I need a gift for every clue?

We recommend a small find at each chosen location. In my experience a child's birthday works better when they find something at every stop. It doesn't need to be a big gift. For some stops it could be a sweet, a coin or another small treat, and for others a bigger present.

Is this a birthday party game?

No. These two hunts are made for one birthday child finding their own gifts. Siblings can help.
